Final project Character Design

For my final college art show, I wanted to combine my 2 favourite forms of artistic expression, being character design and sewing.

So for this Project I wanted to create many unique character designs and then turn one of those designs into a fully wearable costume.
​
For the character design portion I wanted to use a dungeons and dragons like fantasy setting but I also wanted to include my love for music so the first thing I made sure when making each character was to give them a song I could loosely base there personality or aesthetic on.
​
I then gave each character a name, pronouns , race , class and a role in this hypothetical world. I thought it would be super fun if they all had quests or reasons to be a part of a bigger story and use that as a good way of explaining a bit of there personalities.
​
Some of the characters stories intermingle where some are stand alone. Each character also has inspiration from things I adore which is mostly in the naming conventions but sometimes this leaks over into each individual.
Hazel Papaver
Hazels name was originally gonna be poppy since her family works on a poppy farm but I as strange as it is already have a goblin character named poppy ((who may or may not be great great grand daughter of Hazel))

So I instead went with the family name Papaver which is deprived from the word Papaveraceae which is of course the family name for the poppy plant species.
​
Her staff is also based off a dried poppy seed flower
Jack
Jacks naming convention is a little less interesting, having just directly taken the name from the song they are based off "Our Boy Jack" by The Mechanisms.
​
The song by the Mechs is a play on from the Italian protest song "Bella Ciao" which is fitting for the song narrative but also my rendition of the character, Jack is hinted to be a war hero if this is true or not is up to the viewers.
​
In the song Jack is a "hero" but in reality he ran away and died and didn't see any action or do anything helpful,I wanted to play with this idea of having a character maybe being a hero or maybe being a fraud.
The name The Aurora Pub is also a reference to The Mechs band, there in universe space craft is also called the Aurora.

Amelia Bonny
Amelia is one of my favourite characters that Id made for this entire project so it only seemed fair she was inspired by something I absolutely adore, So Alot of my works and characters in general ((both for this and in my life)) are based on pirates and privateers.
​
Amelias last name Bonny comes directly from the real life famous female pirate Anne Bonny.
​
Amelia shares lots of similar traits to her irl naming convention but something that I felt was important to include was her fiery personality and that she is one of the most beautiful women on the seas, which is directly the same as Anne Bonny ((or was)) .

Elijah Interstice
Elijah and his sister Seer are both from a very high regarded family in this fantasy world Ive created, and they both are clerics of different variants, Elijah is a cleric of the order domain having him based in control and high power.
​
Elijahs name doesn't have lots of meaning behind it aside from, I wanted him to have a biblical name ((though in game religion doesn't work the same)) I wanted to include this to show that he is very much rooted in religion with his own fantasy god.
​
The last name Interstice on the other hand means a small space or crevice that can be looked through, I thought this was a little clever since the family now uses eye imagery ((thanks to Seer)) But it also has direct links to how the family is over looked and not regarded in the worlds politics despite being very high in regards. The family its self is an Interstice, there on goings have to be seen through a tiny peep hole.
Seer Interstice
The meaning behind the word seer is referred to someone who can see the future through means of supernatural insight.

Seer was named this based off the fact she has permanent true sight, she can see through all spells and disguises. She uses the eye imagery of being able to see all , due to her sight this then became a huge part of her familys image to the rest of the world.
Alice Gold
Alice Gold is named after my absolute favourite history trivia, being of course The Forty Elephants gang from the 1920s , an all women gang that rivalled other gangs and mafia during this time, the women in this game would steal and loot using a combination of there large dresses and good looks.
​
Alice Golds name comes from the Leader of this gang Alice Dimond, who was notorious , she also used her rings as a weapon for they acted like brass knuckles. The fictional character Alice Gold also has this quirk and uses her rings violently as well if need be.
Alice Gold also similar to the womens gang, uses her charm to swindle and rob everyone she comes across blind.
Rafale Rivet
Rafales signature fighting style mechanic exposing a opponents aura, using a small machine hes built, it automatically gives away the opponents strengths and weaknesses and well as any immunities that individual might have.
This ironically is close to what the definition of a meridian is ((The calculation of aura and energy flow through a persons body according to Chinese medicine , a meridian is also the word for the north and south poles magnetic connection to each other))

He and his identical twin sister also share the last name Rivet, being a piece of metal thats nailed in place keeping the two parts together.
​
This both plays on the more mechanical nature of the two but also the fact that they are beyond inseparable, just as a rivet would be. ((Hopefully))
Meridian Rivet
Opposite to her brother Meridians unique alchemist fighting and inventing style is fast loud and dangerous, which is the definition of a Rafale ((an artillery blast)) .

She fights wild and unpredictable just as she invents and enchants.
​
I wanted the twins to be a duel pack, they go together everywhere and figured it would be a little silly if i switched there name meanings to the other twin instead.
Marie Gabbro
Maries naming convention comes from two different places that both help to make up her character, the first being Marie which was based off Marie Currie who discovered the materials radium and polonium which help in todays medicines and cancer treatments.
​
I though Marie Currie fit since the dwarf Marie also discovers materials and uses them to super charge weapons and machinery to attempt to help with the by hand job her people and family have been doing in terms of mining. She wants to make it an easier job.
​
Gabbro is a mineral of a greenish dark hue.
​

Brecilian Scelig
This little goblin boys naming conventions are a bit more on the nerdy side, the name Brecilian comes from the name of the cursed forest where you first meet wild Dalish elves and werewolves in the video game Dragon Age Origins.
​
I wanted to include this since the Dragon Age series is one of my favourite video game series but also play on the fact that in the video game this forest is awful to traverse, impossible loops and no straight path which is similar to the forest the character Brecilian is protecting, but also the Dragon Age forest is cursed which the one this hunter is protecting may or may not also be.
​
Then his last name Scelig comes from the Irish word Rocks or rook . It ALSO is the inspiration for the island Skellige from the video game Witcher Wild hunt. I wanted to keep the theme of nerdy overlooked video game references, that possibly only I would know. ((Cuz who knows this kinda random knowledge ?? ))
Rosa
Rosa is probably my least thought out character for this particular project ((For these purposes I mean, Rosa has the most actual backstory and development)) Due to them being my In real life Dungeons and dragons character, I wanted to make there jacket and I felt like it was a good fit to add them even just temporarily to this universe.

For what its worth they do have an interesting naming convention;
There name comes from the Character from the show Orange is the new black , who through out the whole show is only known as Cancer ((since she has cancer)) but then in the episode that explains her backstory is revelled her name is Rosa, I adore the character and her backstory was possibly the coolest in the entire show, being a bank robber and so I thought it fit well for my short tempered Rogue elf.
