Thank you my twilight

Acrylic on canvas, 2019

For my second last project with my Painting 2 class I took while in college at Medicine Hat, we were giving the assignment of finding lots of almost random and different pieces of reference materials ranging from anything we could find online, in magazines, classical art and things from our imagination and pair them with the idea of making interesting compositions from mixing up the things and changing there orientation.

This project had a ton of things we had to follow while trying to get us out of our "artist" minds and leave things in varying degrees of unfinished or leaving things like mistakes on the canvas and pair up so many different styles and concept. This was on of my favourite assignments from that class, It proved to be a huge challenge to get out of the mindset that we'd normally strive for , we had to almost intentionally be imperfect.

On top of all of that, the canvas size was 5ft x 5ft and the students had to buy, assemble and stretch there own canvas which was an amazing thing to learn and definitely made the imperfect side of the project harder having put so much effort into building the canvas.

I in the end, enjoyed the challenge and was pretty excited to be able to justify putting some of my own favourite medias and art inspo into this piece. The large robot is Canti from the anime FLCL the middle blue piece is based off many Van Gogh background paintings ((mainly the sunflowers)) and then the bird and iceberg are from 2 separate magazines I had ripped up. Then adding random words from lyrics and conversations I had while working on the piece.
